“At last we are now complete,” CHR Chairperson Leila M. De Lima said as the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) today welcomed the appointment of Atty. Jose Manuel Subang Mamauag as the newest Commissioner of the independent constitutional body.
Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, Atty. Manuel “Maning” Mamauag is the Director of CHR Region lX, Zamboanga City . A native of Iligan City , the newest member of the Commission is also known for his outspoken and courageous stance in various human rights issues especially in Mindanao.
“We are truly glad for the appointment of Commissioner Mamauag. His expertise in the field of human rights plus his dedication and passion to his work will definitely contribute to the Commission’s thrust to be the premier human rights institution in the country,” the CHR top leader said.
According to Chairperson De Lima the entire body is likewise gladdened by the fact that people recognize the institution’s effort to be proactive. She said she is also elated by the thought that the public appreciates how the CHR immediately addresses human rights concerns and responds to them accordingly. “The people’s trust and confidence in the Commission serves as the driving force for the institution to be more responsive to their needs.”
Chairperson De Lima added that since Commissioner Mamauag is a CHR ‘insider’, his familiarity with the rigors and rudiments connected with the handling of human rights cases will become handy. Everybody will complement each other’s tasks.
Although the 4 th Commission has accomplished quite a lot that include conduct of Public Hearings, Fact-Finding Investigations, Issuance of Advisories on various human rights issues, monitoring of human rights compliance of the government, to name a few and with barely a year upon assumption to the post, the CHR head assured the public that the institution will work harder and remain steadfast on its mandate to protect, promote and fulfill human rights of all individuals regardless of their stature in the society.
