BANGLADESH STUDY TOUR VISIT ON NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS
Five (5) government officials from the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) visited the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines (CHRP) last November 5-7, 2007. The visit is in connection with the plan of the Government of Bangladesh to establish a National Human Rights Institution (NHRI).
CHRP Chairperson Purificacion C. Valera Quisumbing, Commissioner Eligio P. Mallari, Commissioner Wilhelm D. Soriano and CHRP Director’s welcomed the GoB delegates.
The Chairperson talked about how the CHRP was conceived, her recommendations to the delegates on their study on setting up a NHRI and how the CHRP can be the model to them in establishing their Bangladeshi NHRI.
As the Commission is encouraging the establishment of a National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) in the Asia Pacific Region, the CHRP Directors discussed the functions, services and activities of the Commission. The visiting delegates, headed by T.I.M. Nurun Nabi Chowdhury, Solicitor (Joint Secretary), expressed his interest on the Barangay Human Rights Action Center (BHRAC) Program of the CHRP. With their short trip to a BHRAC in Baclaran, Parañaque City, the Bangladeshi delegates saw for themselves how the concept of reaching out to the grassroots level of society through volunteers can contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights. |
