CHR Regional Office XI Report

Human Rights March

      On December 10, 2012, the Commission on Human Rights-XI in collaboration with the Ateneo de Davao University through its University Community Engagement and Advocacy Council (UCEAC) initiated a Human Rights Parade in culmination of the 2012 National Human Rights Consciousness Week. The parade was participated by various partner agencies and institutions. The event officially started at 3:00 pm from Roxas Avenue to Rizal Park, Davao City.

      The activity aimed not only to reflect the meaning, importance and the need for human rights in commemoration with observance of International Human Rights Day on December 10 but also to condemn the human rights violations committed against environmental defenders, indigenous peoples, and community leaders opposed to developmental aggression. An estimate of 3,000 representatives from various government agencies, non-government organizations, academe and civil society groups joined the parade marking the 64 th Anniversary of the International Declaration of Human Rights.

      Participants were welcomed by Atty. Romeo I. Cabarde, Jr., Chairperson of UCEAC. Representatives both from government and civil society organizations presented several performances. The event was highlighted by the symbolic lighting of candles by all dutybearers, stakeholders and other HR defenders at the ground of Rizal Park.

      CHR-XI HR Atty. III, Atty. Junitte Rose F. Barroquillo led the recitation of Panata ng Karapatang Pantao. OIC Director Atty. Edmundo R. Albay delivered a solidarity message in support of the rights of the indigenous people to live peacefully in their ancestral land free from environmental destruction. The activity ended with the signing of the Promise Wall signifying the commitments of the participants to comply with their obligation to respect, protect and fulfill human rights.


CHR XI Personnel and other participants assembled at Freedom Park for the Human Rights March in culmination of the Human Rights Week held last December 10, 2012.


The Naval Forces participated in the Human Rights March.


Different civil society organizations and academe joined the Human Rights March.


Participants gathered for the lighting of the candles in commemoration of the victims of Human Rights Violations.
